About Us
Welcome to Crossed Key’s Musical Theatre Company website, if you are over 16 and have an interest in singing and dancing this is the place for you.
We perform twice a year, our main show is in the Birmingham Old Rep a beautiful and recently refurbished Birmingham theatre in the classic style, easy access to bus and train stations and ample parking within walking distance. The theatre provides disabled access to audience members.
The shows we perform are all well known musicals that involve principle soloists and Chorus we have live music supplied by a band, lately it has been approx 6 pieces.
During the year we do a concert that gives a chance to all members to perform in solo and ensemble numbers, this is usually at the Dovehouse in Solihull, a studio theatre in Langley School.
As you can see from the list of past shows over the past 63 years we have done everything from ‘Pirates of Penzance’ to ‘Godspell’, ‘Crossed Keys at the Movies’ to ‘Return to the Forbidden Planet.’
We rehearse twice a week, Mondays for everyone and a second weekday night convenient to all principles for the main characters.
Our rehearsal venue is The Grange Social Club, Acocks Green, 13 Broad Road, Birmingham, B27 7UZ. Rehearsals run between 7:30pm and 10:00pm.
The shows are financed by income from ticket sales and members are expected to sell to friends, family and colleagues.
From time to time we organize social and fundraising events such as quizzes, theatre trips and barbecues.
We have an active Facebook page and members are also friends.
We have just completed a successful run of shows at Birmingham Old Rep of ‘Boogie Nights – the 70’s Musical’.
We welcome new members so if you are interested please get in touch via the website, Facebook or call 0121 605 8912.
Our History
Jean and Brian Davis founded The Crossed Keys Musical Theatre Company in 1950. It was originally a Gilbert and Sullivan society, and the first show was “Pirates of Penzance”. The Crossed Keys in question were those of St Peters church, where the performance was given at a harvest supper.
After eight years of performing Gilbert and Sullivan, we first branched out in 1958 with ‘Blossom Time’ and have continued to perform a wide range of traditional and modern musicals ever since.
Over the years we have performed in several venues including the Crescent, Birmingham Alexandra and the ICC. ‘Return to the Forbidden Planet’ and ‘Boogie Nights’ saw the company return to the newly refurbished Birmingham Old Rep.
If you are interested in joining us on stage or behind the scenes please contact our secretary Alex Patterson 07950 637835.
We look forward to seeing you at rehearsals or one of our shows soon.
